Ingredients

  • 750 grams Italian sausage
  • 1 onion
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 green bell pepper, small
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 4 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 ciabatta buns
  • fresh mozzarella cheese
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • In a large pan or skillet on medium heat, add olive oil and sauté finely chopped garlic with diced onions. Remove the sausage from the casing and add it to the pan. Break it into crumbles as it cooks
  • After 10 mins, add chopped bell peppers, crushed tomatoes, cayenne pepper,  dried oregano, ½ teaspoon salt and pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for another 15 mins, stirring occasionally. This will allow the sauce to thicken slightly
  • While the sauce is simmering, drizzle olive oil on the sliced ciabatta buns. Sear the buns on a hot pan to achieve a nice char
  • Spoon a generous portion of the sloppy joe filling onto the bottom half of each seared bun. Add the fresh mozzarella cheese over the filling
  • You can either use a blowtorch to melt the cheese or place it in the oven for 45 seconds to a minute over broil setting. Serve the sloppy joes with a side of salad, coleslaw or some crispy potato wedges for a complete meal
