Walk through the Recipe
Let's make these messy and delicious Italian sloppy joes.

We start off by preparing all the ingredients for the sloppy joe sauce.

We sauté garlic and onions in olive oil. Add the sausage in the pan after removing the casing. We break down the sausage into crumbles as it cooks to avoid big lumps.

Once the sausage is cooked half way through, we add the remaining ingredients to the pan.

We now give it a quick stir and let it simmer, stirring occasionally. Allow the sauce to thicken slightly.

As the sauce thickens, drizzle olive oil on the sliced ciabatta buns and sear on a hot pan for a nice char.

It's finally time to assemble. Add a big spoon of the sloppy joe sauce over the bottom half of the bun and add mozzarella cheese over it.

We then melt the cheese either using a blowtorch or using the broil setting in the oven. Your Italian sloppy joes are finally ready. Serve them hot with a side of slaw, potato wedges or salad.

Substitutions
You can replace some of the ingredients in the recipe, to suit what you have at home, or if you don't find them in the store
- Ciabatta buns: focaccia bread, baguette
- Mozzarella cheese: provolone or parmesan cheese
- Italian sausage: ground meat, ground turkey, or any plant-based meat substitute
Tips
- Make Ahead: You have an option to prepare the filling in advance and reheat when ready to serve for convenience.
- Slow Simmering: Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat to let the flavors meld together. Cooking on high heat will simply dry out the meat and burn the bottom of the pan.
- Tomato Sauce: Use canned crushed tomatoes or make your own tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes to achieve that gooey texture which you won’t get with fresh tomatoes.

FAQs
Sloppy Joes likely derived their name from their messy, saucy filling. The name's origin is debated, with theories pointing to Key West's "Sloppy Joe's Bar" and the cook Joe "Sloppy Joe" Fredrick in Sioux City, Iowa, who created similar sandwiches. The messy nature of the dish makes the name fitting.
While crushed tomatoes provide a consistent texture and flavor, you can use fresh tomatoes if preferred. Simply peel and dice fresh tomatoes and cook them down to create a tomato sauce-like consistency.
Italian Sloppy Joes can be made ahead of time. You can prepare the filling and refrigerate it. Reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave when ready to serve.
Store leftover Sloppy Joes in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To freeze, store the filing separately from the buns in freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 2-3 months.
