Walk through the Recipe
Let’s start preparing our Garlic Butter Cheese Buns.

We begin by whisking lukewarm milk, yeast and sugar in a large mixing bowl to activate the yeast. The yeast is activated once the mixture has turned foamy and risen.

Add in one egg, melted butter, all-purpose flour and salt. Mix the ingredients with a spatula. Cover with a cloth and set it aside for 1 hour allowing the dough to rise.

Once the dough has risen, sprinkle over flour and gently punch the dough to release the carbon dioxide.

Move the dough to a flat surface and fold it a few times. Flatten out the dough and evenly cut it into 16 pieces. Roll the dough into a ball and cover with a cloth to prevent drying.

We then flatten out one piece of the dough and add cheese in the center. Bring the sides in to form a cheese-filled roll. Roll it with your palm to get a perfect oval shape.

Cover the cheese-stuffed rolls with a cloth and set aside for 10 minutes until it has risen. Place these cheesy rolls in a baking dish over parchment paper, leaving enough room so they do not stick together.

Bake it in the oven at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush the buns with a generous amount of the garlic herb butter before serving.
Substitutions
You can replace some of the ingredients in the recipe to suit what you have at home.
- Milk: water
- Cilantro: parsley
- White cheese: any cheese or combination of cheeses
- Egg: you can omit egg as per your preference
Tips
- Dusting your hands with flour while folding, cutting or rolling the dough prevents sticking and it creates less mess.
- Keep the buns or dough covered with a cloth when not being handled, to prevent the dough from drying out.
- Pinch the dough to close any holes or gaps after placing the cheese in the center and rolling. This will prevent the cheese from oozing out during baking.
- Time is key while preparing bread, allow enough time for the yeast to activate and for the dough to rise.
- Heat the milk to 100-110℉ or for 30-45 seconds in the microwave, to activate the yeast and remember not to overheat the milk as it will kill the yeast.
FAQs
Active dry yeast requires a warm liquid to activate and takes 10-15 minutes longer than Instant yeast. Whereas, Instant yeast does not need to be activated and can be added directly to the flour and other ingredients.
You will need to add yeast to a bowl of warm water or milk along with sugar and set aside covered for 10-15 minutes.
Store it in a refrigerator for up to a week, in an airtight container. Reheat in a pan or oven before consuming.
